Essential Cutting Board Care & Maintenance Guide

How to Clean, Protect, and Extend the Life of Your Wooden Cutting Board

Why Proper Cutting Board Care Matters

A handcrafted wooden cutting board is a functional tool and a long-term investment. With proper care, it can last for decades while remaining safe, beautiful, and knife-friendly.

Because natural hardwood responds to moisture and temperature, simple habits help prevent warping, cracking, and staining. Fortunately, caring for a wooden cutting board takes only minutes and delivers lasting protection. By using our Board Butter Conditioner you will prolong the life of your board, have an easier time cleaning and keep it looking its best.

Types of Wooden Cutting Boards & Care Differences

How Often to Condition

All of our boards come well oiled and waxed. You may notice some sweating has occurred in shipping and after unboxing. This is normal and will stop shortly. Your board also came with a complementary Premium Board Butter as you will be applying more conditioner during the first few weeks.

Conditioning Steps

  1. Apply Board Butter generously
  2. Rub in with a clean cloth
  3. Let absorb 4–8 hours (overnight preferred)
  4. Wipe off excess

Boards used frequently may require conditioning more often.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Board Feels Rough

Lightly sand with fine grit (220–320), then apply conditioner.

Board Warping

Caused by uneven moisture. Condition both sides evenly and always dry upright.

Surface Stains

Use lemon and salt or light sanding followed by conditioning.

Cracks or Checks

If conditioned when needed (Don’t let it get to dry) the wood will be stable. Severe cracks may appear if conditioning is neglected and will require repair.
